Apple’s iTunes store has listed the best-selling and top-rated apps for this third-to-last year of humanity’s existence. It appears the big boys of game publishing are doing quite well on the App Store, with the ten top grossing games making room for only one independent studio. Gamasutra states Firemint’s Flight Control , with its 99 cent price tag, sold 1.5 million copies and grabbed the number seven spot.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert for the iPhone is now available in the iTunes App Store, with an optional skirmish map pack and more paid DLC on the horizon. Red Alert for the iPhone is a new handheld version of the classic real-time strategy game. It’s trimmed down quite a bit, but it uses the iPhone’s multi-touch capability to pinch-zoom and maneuver units around the map, so there’s definitely enough new there to warrant a purchase

Apple’s iPhone/iPod Touch is a lot like Sony’s PSP in many ways: they both play games, movies and music — and now both can struggle with the effects of piracy . According to iPhone developer Smells Like Donkey , about 80 percent of all downloads of Tap-Fu were illegally downloaded. The developer notes that learning how to pirate games off the iPhone is surprisingly easy, thanks to “a kernel patch that bypasses Apple’s DRM system” that “would take an average person 5 minutes in Google to find.” Additionally, the developer discovered that an average of zero percent of pirates end up purchasing a legitimate copy of Tap-Fu — it seems marking the game down to $1.99 didn’t discourage anyone from taking a free ride

In lieu of an upgradeable demo (they’re not allowed on the App Store) the original Myst ’s iPhone and iPod Touch incarnation now has a “free version.” Myst FREE is a glorified demo that allows players to explore Myst Island, but entering any of the “Ages” will require a full download and $5 charge — a $1 price drop from when the title was first announced . At 123MB, the demo’s download is substantial

Video games stored on a disc of plastic and tucked away in a case are approaching extinction. You can quibble about the when and the how of this happening, but the inevitability of games being sold online like music, free of their plastic prisons, is certain. The first real sign of that step away from games sheathed in cardboard and plastic sold in a bricks and mortar store hit earlier this month in the form of the PSPgo
